About the GAZ Volga GAZ-21
Introduced in 1956 to replace the GAZ-M20 Pobeda, the GAZ-21 Volga was the premier executive car of the Soviet Union, famously serving as the transport of choice for high-ranking officials and the KGB. Its design, heavily influenced by 1950s American styling, featured a high ground clearance and a robust suspension system engineered to withstand the demanding conditions of Soviet roads. The early 'Series 1' models are distinguished by a central star on the grille, a feature that was later replaced by the 'Shark Mouth' and 'Whale Bone' designs. While slow by Western standards, its durability and status as a cultural icon have made it a highly sought-after collector car in Eastern Europe and beyond.
