About the Ford Torino
Introduced in 1968 as a premium sub-series of the Fairlane, the Torino represented Ford's shift toward more aerodynamic and stylish intermediate cars. The 302 cubic-inch (4.9-litre) Windsor V8 served as the entry-level V8, offering a balance of reliability and cruising capability rather than the raw aggression of the big-block Cobra Jets. Its 'formal roof' hardtop design provided a more sophisticated alternative to the radical SportsRoof fastbacks. While often overshadowed by the Mustang, the first-generation Torino was a critical success, even serving as the Indianapolis 500 pace car in its debut year.
