About the Ford Mustang Boss 429

The Boss 429 was a homologation special created to qualify Ford's new 'semi-hemi' engine for NASCAR competition. Because the massive 7.0-litre V8 was too wide for the standard Mustang engine bay, Ford contracted Kar Kraft to extensively modify the front suspension and shock towers. Despite its conservative 375 hp factory rating, the engine was a detuned race unit capable of far more power. It is distinguished by its massive functional hood scoop, front chin spoiler, and 'Boss 429' fender decals, remaining one of the most valuable and collectible Mustangs ever produced.

Ford Mustang Boss 429 fun facts

  • The engine was so large that Ford had to remove the air conditioning to make it fit, meaning no Boss 429 ever left the factory with AC.
  • To accommodate the engine, Kar Kraft had to physically move the shock towers outward and modify the control arms, giving the car a unique suspension geometry.
  • The 375 hp rating was widely considered a 'polite fiction' to appease insurance companies; actual output was estimated to be closer to 500 hp.
