About the Ford Maverick
Launched in April 1969 as a 1970 model, the Ford Maverick was a compact 'sub-Mustang' designed to combat the rising tide of fuel-efficient imports like the Volkswagen Beetle. Built on a shortened Falcon chassis, it prioritised simplicity and low maintenance, famously lacking a glovebox in early models to save costs. The 2.8-litre (170 cu in) straight-six was the entry-level powertrain, offering reliable if modest performance wrapped in a stylish fastback body. While originally intended as a 'throwaway' economy car, its massive sales success and clean lines have earned it a dedicated following among classic Ford collectors.
