About the Chevrolet Vega

The Chevrolet Vega was launched in 1970 as a sophisticated response to rising fuel prices and the influx of small Japanese and European imports. It featured an innovative aluminium-block engine and was initially praised for its handling and styling, even winning MotorTrend's 1971 Car of the Year. However, its legacy was quickly tarnished by severe reliability issues, including engine overheating and rapid body corrosion. Today, early examples are rare survivors of a pivotal era in American automotive history, representing GM's struggle to downsize its fleet.

Chevrolet Vega fun facts

  • To reduce shipping costs, Vegas were transported vertically on their noses in specially designed 'Vert-A-Pac' rail cars.
  • The 2.3-litre engine used a high-silicon aluminium alloy block that was designed to run without steel cylinder liners, a major innovation that led to many of its reliability woes.
  • Despite its reputation, the Vega was a massive sales success initially, with over 2 million units produced during its seven-year lifespan.
