About the Ford Escort Mk3
The Mk3 Escort, codenamed 'Erika', represented a radical departure for Ford, switching to a front-wheel-drive layout and a hatchback body to compete with the Volkswagen Golf. The 1.3 GL was a mainstay of the range, featuring the then-new CVH (Compound Valve-angle Hemispherical) engine which offered improved efficiency over the older Kent units. While enthusiasts initially lamented the loss of the Mk2's rear-wheel-drive handling, the Mk3 was a massive commercial success, winning European Car of the Year in 1981. Today, surviving GL models are increasingly rare, valued for their period-correct velour interiors and status as a definitive 1980s family car.
