About the Fiat Panda Mk1

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro as a 'container' on wheels, the first-generation Panda was a masterclass in utilitarian minimalism. The 4x4 variant, launched in 1983, utilised a four-wheel-drive system developed by Steyr-Puch, making it the first small transverse-engined production car with all-wheel drive. Its lightweight construction and ultra-low first gear allowed it to conquer terrain that would defeat much larger off-roaders. The 1986 model year represents the final iteration of the 'Mk1' series before the introduction of the FIRE engines and Omega rear axle.

Fiat Panda Mk1 fun facts

  • The Panda 4x4's first gear is so low that it acts as a crawler gear; under normal road conditions, drivers are encouraged to start in second gear.
  • The car was named after Empanda, the Roman goddess and patroness of travellers, rather than the bear.
  • Giugiaro famously compared the Panda's design to a pair of jeans: simple, practical, and without unnecessary ornamentation.
