About the Fiat Campagnola 1107
Introduced in 1974, the 'Nuova Campagnola' (Type 1107) was a radical departure from its predecessor, featuring a unibody construction and sophisticated all-independent MacPherson strut suspension. Designed for both military and civilian use, it utilised a simplified version of the Fiat 132's 2.0-litre engine, prioritising low-end torque and reliability for rugged terrain. Its off-road capability was enhanced by a dual-range transfer case and locking differentials, providing a smoother ride than contemporary leaf-sprung rivals. The model gained global recognition as the base for the Popemobile used by Pope John Paul II during the 1980s.
