About the Fiat Campagnola 1101

Introduced in 1951 to meet the Italian Ministry of Defence's need for a light reconnaissance vehicle, the Fiat Campagnola (Type 1101) was a rugged off-roader that became a symbol of post-war reconstruction. Designed by Dante Giacosa, it featured a sophisticated independent front suspension with coil springs, a technical rarity for utility vehicles of the era. While its 1.9-litre petrol engine was modest in output, the Campagnola proved its durability by setting a world record for crossing Africa from south to north in 1952. It served extensively with the Italian military and police, while also finding favour in the agricultural sector.
