About the Renault Colorale
The Renault Colorale was a forward-thinking utility vehicle designed to bridge the gap between a rugged commercial truck and a family estate. Launched in 1950, it was intended for both rural French farmers and colonial territories, though its heavy weight and underpowered engines hindered commercial success. The 2.0-litre 'Frégate' engine introduced in 1953 offered a modest power increase over the original 2.4-litre sidevalve unit. Today, it is recognised as a spiritual ancestor to the modern SUV, prized by collectors for its unique American-inspired 'ponton' styling and rarity.
