About the Dodge Omni
The Dodge Omni, along with its twin the Plymouth Horizon, was a landmark vehicle for Chrysler, representing their first foray into front-wheel-drive economy cars. Introduced to combat the fuel crisis and compete with the Volkswagen Rabbit, the 1985 model featured the robust 2.2-litre 'Trans-4' engine which provided significantly better performance than the earlier 1.7-litre units. While basic in construction, its space-efficient design and affordable price point made it a massive commercial success. Today, standard trims like the 2.2 are rare survivors, often overshadowed by the turbocharged Shelby variants but respected for their historical role in Chrysler's survival.
