About the Dodge Magnum
The 1978 Dodge Magnum XE was introduced as a more aerodynamic successor to the Charger SE, designed specifically to improve Chrysler's competitiveness in NASCAR. Built on the long-running B-body platform, it featured distinctive transparent covers over the quad headlights that retracted when the lights were switched on. While the 5.2-litre (318 cubic inch) V8 was the entry-level engine focused on cruising rather than outright speed, the Magnum represented the final evolution of the traditional Mopar big-body coupe before the shift to smaller, front-wheel-drive platforms.

Dodge Magnum fun facts
- The Magnum's aerodynamic profile was so effective that Richard Petty campaigned one in NASCAR, though he famously complained about its handling compared to the older Charger.
- The 'Clear-Look' headlight covers were a unique styling feature for 1978, using electric motors to flip the transparent panels down.
- Despite its short two-year production run, the Magnum outsold the Chrysler Cordoba in some markets due to its more aggressive, sporty styling.
