About the De Tomaso Vallelunga

The Vallelunga was Alejandro De Tomaso's first production road car, debuting a sophisticated mid-engine layout years before the Ferrari Dino or Lamborghini Miura. It features a lightweight fiberglass body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ghia, mounted on a motorsport-derived pressed steel backbone chassis. Power comes from a tuned Ford Kent engine, which acts as a stressed member of the frame, a radical engineering choice for a road car at the time. Despite its modest power, the Vallelunga's exceptional power-to-weight ratio and race-bred suspension make it a pure, agile driver's car.

De Tomaso Vallelunga rarity in CarSpot

The De Tomaso Vallelunga is a Unicorn card in CarSpot, with a rarity score of 100 out of 100. The rarest tier: hypercars, one-offs and cars built in tiny numbers, typically fewer than about 500. A Unicorn card is worth 320 XP.

Rarity is a collectible game mechanic, not an assessment of real-world scarcity or value.

De Tomaso Vallelunga fun facts

  • The car was named after the Autodromo di Vallelunga, the racing circuit near Rome where Alejandro De Tomaso tested his early competition cars.
  • The Vallelunga's engine and transaxle were used as stressed members of the chassis, a technique borrowed directly from Formula 1 design of the era.
  • Only about 59 examples were ever built, including a handful of aluminium-bodied prototypes by Fissore before production moved to Ghia.
