About the De Tomaso Deauville
The De Tomaso Deauville was Alejandro de Tomaso's ambitious attempt to challenge the Jaguar XJ6 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, its elegant silhouette bore a striking resemblance to the Jaguar, but underneath it featured a robust Ford 351 Cleveland V8 and a chassis later shared with the Maserati Quattroporte III. Despite its sophisticated independent rear suspension and high-speed stability, the Deauville was prohibitively expensive—costing nearly double a contemporary Jaguar—which limited its commercial success. Today, it is a rare and understated alternative to more common 1970s luxury saloons, prized for its exotic rarity and reliable American powertrain.
