About the De Tomaso Pantera GT5
Introduced at the 1980 Turin Motor Show, the GT5 was a radical visual and mechanical evolution of the Pantera, designed to compete with the aggressive styling of the Lamborghini Countach. It is instantly recognisable by its riveted-on fibreglass wheel arch extensions, deep front air dam, and massive 15-inch Campagnolo wheels wrapped in ultra-wide Pirelli P7 rubber. Underneath the Italian coachwork sits a robust Ford 351 Cleveland V8, providing a visceral, high-torque driving experience that is far more reliable than its contemporary European rivals. As one of the rarest factory variants, the GT5 represents the peak of the Pantera's 'poster car' era before the integrated-steel GT5-S arrived.

De Tomaso Pantera GT5 fun facts
- The GT5's rear tyres were a massive 345/35 VR15, which were among the widest tyres ever fitted to a production road car at the time.
- Unlike the later GT5-S which used integrated steel flares, the GT5 used riveted-on fibreglass arches inspired by the Group 4 racing Panteras.
- Because Ford stopped importing the Pantera to the US in 1975, most GT5s were sold in Europe or imported to America via grey-market specialists like Amerisport.
