About the Ferrari 512 BB

Introduced at the 1976 Paris Motor Show, the 512 BB replaced the 365 GT4 BB as Ferrari's flagship supercar. While the name suggested a 'Boxer' engine, it actually used a 180-degree V12 derived from Ferrari's Formula 1 technology, mounted above the transmission. The 512 BB increased displacement to 5.0 litres and adopted dry-sump lubrication to improve reliability and driveability over its predecessor. Visually distinguished by a new chin spoiler, NACA ducts on the lower flanks, and four round tail lights, it remains a purist favourite for its quad triple-choke Weber carburetors.

Ferrari 512 BB fun facts

  • The '512' name broke Ferrari's usual naming convention, standing for 5 litres and 12 cylinders rather than the displacement of a single cylinder.
  • Despite being Ferrari's flagship, the 512 BB was never officially sold in the United States due to strict emissions and safety regulations.
  • The engine is technically a 180-degree V12 rather than a true boxer, as opposing pistons share a single crankpin rather than moving in opposite directions.
