About the Daimler Double Six XJ40
The Daimler Double Six (XJ81) represents the final and most refined evolution of the XJ40 platform. Originally engineered to exclude V-configuration engines, the XJ40 required a significant front-end redesign under Ford ownership to finally accommodate Jaguar's legendary V12. This 6.0-litre unit, paired with a robust GM 4L80-E transmission, transformed the angular saloon into a smooth, high-speed cruiser. Distinguished by its fluted chrome grille and opulent interior featuring picnic tables and lambswool rugs, it remains a rare collector's choice with just over 1,000 Daimler-badged examples produced.

Daimler Double Six XJ40 fun facts
- The XJ40's engine bay was allegedly designed to be too narrow for a V-engine to prevent British Leyland from forcing Jaguar to use the Rover V8.
- The 6.0-litre V12 in the XJ81 was a significant upgrade over the old 5.3-litre, featuring a forged steel crankshaft and a new engine management system.
- While the Jaguar XJ12 version used quad round headlights, the more prestigious Daimler Double Six retained the large rectangular units.
