About the Renault Celtaquatre

Introduced in 1934, the Renault Celtaquatre was a response to the growing trend of aerodynamic design, earning the nickname 'Celtaboule' for its rounded, bulbous silhouette. Heavily influenced by contemporary American styling, it featured a streamlined body that was a radical departure from the boxy Renaults of the early 1930s. Despite its modern looks, it remained mechanically conservative with a side-valve engine and rigid axles to ensure reliability and a low purchase price. It was a commercial success for Renault, though its launch was somewhat overshadowed by the revolutionary Citroën Traction Avant.
