About the Citroën GS Birotor

The GS Birotor was a bold attempt to marry Citroën's legendary hydropneumatic comfort with the smoothness of a Wankel rotary engine. Developed via the Comotor joint venture with NSU, it featured a twin-rotor unit that offered significantly more power than the standard GS but suffered from poor fuel economy and reliability issues. Launched just as the 1973 oil crisis hit, its high price and thirst led to a commercial disaster. Fearing massive warranty liabilities, Citroën attempted to buy back and scrap every example, making the few hundred survivors among the rarest and most sought-after post-war Citroëns.

  • To accommodate the wider rotary powertrain and larger tyres, the Birotor features distinctively flared wheel arches and unique five-lug wheels.
