About the Citroën BX 4TC

The Citroën BX 4TC is one of the most idiosyncratic results of the Group B rally era, featuring a longitudinally mounted Simca-Chrysler engine that necessitated a significantly extended front overhang. Unlike its mid-engined rivals, it retained a steel monocoque and Citroën's signature hydropneumatic suspension, which proved too heavy and complex for competitive success. After a dismal WRC career lasting just three rallies, Citroën attempted to buy back and scrap the road cars to protect its reputation. Consequently, it is now one of the rarest homologation specials, prized by collectors for its unique engineering and 'what might have been' history.

Citroën BX 4TC fun facts

  • Citroën was so embarrassed by the car's poor performance that they reportedly destroyed most of the unsold units and many they managed to buy back from customers.
  • The 4TC used a 5-speed manual transmission sourced from the legendary Citroën SM grand tourer.
  • Because the engine was mounted longitudinally instead of transversely like a standard BX, the car's nose had to be extended by several inches, giving it a unique, front-heavy silhouette.
