About the Bristol 403
The Bristol 403 was the final evolution of the marque's 'Aerodyne' series, blending aircraft-grade construction with a refined version of the BMW-derived straight-six engine. Built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, it featured a Superleggera-style aluminium body over a tubular steel frame, achieving a drag coefficient remarkably low for the era. The 403 introduced significant mechanical upgrades over the 401, including larger valves and main bearings that pushed output to 100 bhp, making it the first saloon from the brand to exceed 100 mph. Its understated styling and high entry price ensured it remained a choice for the discerning elite who valued engineering integrity over ostentation.

Bristol 403 rarity in CarSpot
The Bristol 403 is a Unicorn card in CarSpot, with a rarity score of 100 out of 100. The rarest tier: hypercars, one-offs and cars built in tiny numbers, typically fewer than about 500. A Unicorn card is worth 320 XP.

Rarity is a collectible game mechanic, not an assessment of real-world scarcity or value.
Bristol 403 fun facts
- The 403 was the last Bristol model to feature the BMW-style 'kidney' radiator grille before the brand moved to its own distinct styling.
- It utilised 'Alfin' (aluminium-finned) drum brakes, which were so effective that Bristol engineers initially worried the car was 'over-braked'.
- The spare wheel is cleverly housed in a dedicated compartment inside one of the front wings to maintain the car's aerodynamic profile.
