About the Alfa Romeo 2000

Introduced at the 1957 Turin Motor Show, the 2000 Berlina (Tipo 102) was Alfa Romeo's flagship executive saloon, succeeding the 1900 Super. It featured a cast-iron block 1,975cc twin-cam engine and was one of the first mass-produced cars to offer a five-speed manual gearbox as standard. While the Spider and Sprint variants received coachbuilt bodies by Touring and Bertone, the Berlina was styled in-house with a conservative, upright aesthetic. Its large dimensions and modest power meant it was more of a refined cruiser than a sports saloon, leading to low sales compared to its more glamorous siblings.

Alfa Romeo 2000 fun facts

  • The 2000 Berlina featured a column-mounted gear shifter, allowing for a full-width front bench seat that could accommodate three people.
  • Despite being the flagship, the Berlina was actually outsold by the 2000 Spider, a rarity for saloon-based model ranges.
  • The engine is often called the 'cast-iron 2-litre' to distinguish it from the later all-aluminium twin-cam engines found in the Giulia series.
