About the Volvo ÖV 4

The Volvo ÖV 4, standing for 'Öppen Vagn 4 cylindrar' (Open Carriage 4 cylinders), was the first series-produced car from the Swedish marque. Launched in 1927, it featured a body constructed from an ash and beech frame covered in sheet metal, finished exclusively in dark blue with black wings. While its open-top design was ill-suited to the harsh Swedish climate, it established Volvo's reputation for building robust, reliable vehicles. Its 1.9-litre side-valve engine was designed by co-founder Gustaf Larson, providing a modest but dependable 28 horsepower.

Volvo ÖV 4 fun facts

  • The official launch was delayed by one day because the first production car was accidentally assembled with the rear differential fitted backwards, causing it to drive in reverse.
  • The nickname 'Jakob' actually belonged to one of the ten pre-series prototypes completed on 25 July 1926, which is St. Jakob's name day in Sweden.
  • The car's bodywork was inspired by the French Voisin C5, a personal favourite of the car's designer, Helmer MasOlle.
