About the Volkswagen Transporter T3

The T3 generation, often called the T25 in the UK or Vanagon in the US, was the final chapter for Volkswagen's rear-engined Transporter lineage. While the factory never officially offered a 1.9-litre turbodiesel during the primary German production run, the '1.9 TD' (specifically the AAZ engine code) has become the definitive enthusiast specification. This engine swap is so common and well-documented that it is considered the standard 'modern' heart for the T3, offering a significant torque improvement over the original 1.6-litre units. It retains the classic 'wedge' charm and excellent packaging while providing enough power to maintain highway speeds and tackle steep inclines, making it a favourite for camper conversions.
