About the Volkswagen Passat B1
Launched in 1973, the B1 Passat was a pivotal moment for Volkswagen, replacing the ageing rear-engined Type 3 and Type 4 models with a modern, water-cooled, front-wheel-drive layout. It was essentially a fastback version of the Audi 80, featuring sharp styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign. The 1.3-litre entry-level model offered modest performance but established the Passat as a practical, well-built family car. Today, early B1 models are rare survivors and increasingly sought after by enthusiasts of 1970s European design.
