About the Volkswagen Gol Mk1
The Volkswagen Gol was designed specifically for the South American market to replace the ageing Beetle, utilizing a unique combination of a modified BX platform and an air-cooled flat-four engine. Despite its modern hatchback styling, the initial 1980 models were criticized for being underpowered until the 1.6-litre engine was introduced to improve performance. Its rugged simplicity and front-wheel-drive layout made it exceptionally well-suited to Brazilian road conditions. The Mk1 Gol eventually became a cultural icon, leading the Brazilian sales charts for over two decades.
