About the Triumph 1300
Launched in 1965 as a premium alternative to the Herald, the Triumph 1300 was the company's first front-wheel-drive model. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it featured a scaled-down version of the Triumph 2000's elegant styling and a high-quality interior with real wood and plush vinyl. The engine was mounted longitudinally above the gearbox, a layout that allowed for an exceptionally tight turning circle. Despite its innovation and refined road manners, Triumph eventually retreated from front-wheel drive, re-engineering the platform into the rear-wheel-drive Toledo and Dolomite ranges.
