About the Toyota Proace MDX

The first-generation Toyota Proace was introduced in 2013 to replace the Hiace in the European market, filling a gap in Toyota's LCV line-up. It was a badge-engineered version of the Citroën Jumpy, Peugeot Expert, and Fiat Scudo, produced at the Sevel Nord plant in France. The 2.0 D-4D variant utilised a PSA-sourced DW10 engine, offering a balance of torque and efficiency suitable for payload duties. While it lacked Toyota's own mechanical DNA, it provided the brand with a competitive medium van featuring modern safety equipment and car-like ergonomics.

Toyota Proace MDX fun facts

  • The Proace was the result of a 2012 agreement between Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroën to collaborate on light commercial vehicles for the European market.
  • Unlike the global Hiace, the Proace featured a 'short-bonnet' design rather than a cab-over layout, significantly improving crash safety ratings.
  • Despite being a French-built van, Toyota offered it with their five-year/100,000-mile warranty in the UK to distinguish it from its Peugeot and Citroën siblings.
