About the Sunbeam Rapier
Introduced at the 1955 London Motor Show, the Sunbeam Rapier Series I was the first of the Rootes Group's 'Audax' range, predating its Hillman and Singer siblings. Its pillarless hardtop styling was heavily influenced by Raymond Loewy's Studebaker Starliner, featuring distinctive two-tone paintwork and a wrap-around rear window. Mechanically, it utilised a 1.4-litre engine derived from the Hillman Minx but tuned for higher performance with a standard Laycock de Normanville overdrive. While not a powerhouse, its precise handling and refined interior made it a popular choice for international rallying, including a notable fifth-place finish at the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally.
