About the Sunbeam Rapier Fastback
The Sunbeam Rapier Fastback, part of the Rootes 'Arrow' range, was a radical departure from the upright saloons of the 1950s. Styled by Roy Axe, its pillarless silhouette bore a striking resemblance to the contemporary Plymouth Barracuda, reflecting Chrysler's growing influence over the Rootes Group. Underneath the sleek body, it shared a floorpan with the Hillman Hunter Estate, providing a practical four-seat cabin. The 1725cc engine, canted at an angle to allow for a lower bonnet line, delivered respectable performance for a grand tourer of its era. Today, it is prized for its unique transatlantic styling and its role as the final flagship of the Sunbeam marque.
