About the Suzuki Twin

The Suzuki Twin is a two-seat kei car that prioritised urban agility and efficiency above all else. Measuring just 2.73 metres in length, it was even shorter than the contemporary Smart Fortwo, featuring a distinctive 'cartoonish' design with bulbous headlights and a glass rear hatch. While a pioneering hybrid version was offered, the standard petrol model used the reliable K6A three-cylinder engine. Its tiny footprint and 3.6-metre turning radius made it exceptionally easy to park in dense Japanese cities, though its lack of storage and basic interior limited its broader appeal.

Suzuki Twin fun facts

  • The Twin was the first hybrid kei car ever produced, though the hybrid system added significant cost and weight for only modest fuel gains.
  • To save costs and battery power, the base models featured a power window only on the driver's side, while the passenger side was manual.
  • The passenger seat was designed to fold completely flat, creating a plastic utility tray to compensate for the car's lack of a traditional boot.
