About the Subaru R2
Launched in late 2003, the Subaru R2 was a premium entry into the Japanese kei car segment, notable for its 'spread wings' grille which referenced Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, and its aircraft heritage. Unlike most competitors that used three-cylinder engines, the R2 utilised a sophisticated 658cc EN07 inline-four engine, providing smoother operation. The exterior design was penned by Andreas Zapatinas, formerly of Alfa Romeo, giving the car a distinctively European aesthetic compared to the 'tall-boy' boxes of the era. While its tight rear packaging limited practicality, it remains a cult favourite for its unique styling and mechanical refinement.
