About the Subaru Baja

The Subaru Baja is a unique 'sport utility pickup' based on the Legacy/Outback platform, designed to blend passenger car comfort with the utility of an open bed. Its most distinctive feature is the 'Switchback' system, a pass-through door that allows the cargo area to extend into the rear cabin. While it failed to meet Subaru's ambitious sales targets during its four-year run, it has since gained a cult following for its unconventional styling and car-like handling. The 2.5 Sport trim provides a reliable, naturally aspirated experience, though it lacks the punch of the later Turbo models.

Subaru Baja fun facts

  • The Baja was inspired by the Subaru BRAT of the 1970s, though it traded the BRAT's rear-facing jump seats for a more practical four-door crew cab layout.
  • Subaru originally projected sales of 24,000 units per year, but only managed to sell approximately 30,000 units in total over its entire production lifespan.
  • The license plate bracket is designed to flip down when the tailgate is open, ensuring the plate remains visible to satisfy legal requirements while hauling long loads.
