About the Singer Gazelle

Introduced in 1956, the Singer Gazelle Series I was the first model produced following the Rootes Group's takeover of Singer. It utilised the body shell of the Hillman Minx 'Audax' series but distinguished itself with a more premium interior and the carry-over 1497cc overhead-cam engine from the Singer Hunter. Available as a saloon or a drophead coupé, it offered a more upmarket alternative to its Hillman and Sunbeam siblings. The Series I is noted for its traditional walnut dash and higher quality trim, marking the transition of Singer into a luxury badge-engineered brand.

Singer Gazelle fun facts

  • The Series I was the only Gazelle to feature the Singer-designed overhead-cam engine before it was replaced by a Hillman-derived overhead-valve unit in the Series II.
  • The Gazelle's distinctive radiator grille was a deliberate design choice to maintain Singer's brand identity within the Rootes Group's 'Audax' family.
  • Despite its premium positioning, the Gazelle shared many mechanical components with the Hillman Minx and Sunbeam Rapier to reduce production costs.
