About the Singer 1500
The Singer 1500 was a significant post-war design for the Coventry-based manufacturer, featuring a modern full-width 'pontoon' body style that moved away from pre-war aesthetics. Its most notable feature was the 1.5-litre overhead-camshaft engine, a sophisticated design for a family car of the era when most rivals used side-valve or overhead-valve units. The car utilised an independent front suspension system and a chassis based on the Singer Super 10, providing a comfortable ride. While it was more expensive than contemporary Hillmans or Austins, it offered a level of engineering refinement that appealed to professional buyers. Production continued until 1954 when it was replaced by the Hunter, shortly before the Rootes Group takeover.
