About the SEAT 1200 Sport
Launched in late 1975, the SEAT 1200 Sport is a landmark in Spanish automotive history as the first model developed at the Martorell Technical Centre. Its distinctive 'Bocanegra' (black mouth) nickname comes from the innovative black polyurethane front fascia designed by Aldo Sessano, which integrated the bumper and grille. While it utilised a 1.2-litre engine from the SEAT 124, the engineers adapted it for a transverse front-wheel-drive layout, a significant technical challenge at the time. It offers a period-correct, agile driving experience, though it is now prized more for its unique styling and status as a symbol of Spanish industrial independence.

SEAT 1200 Sport fun facts
- The body design was originally intended for a rear-engined NSU sports car, which explains the non-functional air vents on the rear pillars.
- The 'Bocanegra' name was so iconic that SEAT revived it in 2008 for a special edition of the fourth-generation Ibiza.
- Despite its sporty looks, the 1200 Sport was designed to be practical, featuring a remote boot release handle located on the driver's door pillar.
