About the Saab 95

The Saab 95 is a distinctive three-door estate renowned for its aerodynamic 'long-nose' styling and surprising seven-seat capacity via a rear-facing third row. While early models used two-stroke engines, the 1967 introduction of the Ford-sourced 1.5-litre V4 provided the torque and reliability needed for mainstream success. Its aviation-inspired engineering includes a freewheel facility and a column-mounted gear shifter, features that remained even after the switch to four-stroke power. Highly capable on loose surfaces, the 95 earned significant respect in international rallying, most notably in the hands of Erik Carlsson.

Saab 95 fun facts

  • Despite its compact dimensions, the Saab 95 featured a fold-down, rear-facing third-row seat, making it a genuine seven-seater.
  • The V4 engine was originally developed by Ford for the 'Cardinal' project, which eventually became the front-wheel-drive Taunus 12M.
  • The car retained a 'freewheel' mode, a carryover from the two-stroke era designed to prevent engine seizure during coasting.
