About the Mazda 616

The Mazda 616, known domestically in Japan as the Capella, was a pivotal model that established Mazda as a serious contender in the global mid-size market. Launched to bridge the gap between the smaller Familia and larger 1500/1800 models, it featured a conventional piston engine as an alternative to the rotary-powered RX-2. Its clean, Italian-influenced styling and robust rear-wheel-drive chassis earned it a reputation for reliability and better-than-average driving dynamics for its class. While many were used as everyday commuters and eventually scrapped, surviving examples are now appreciated as significant early Japanese classics.
