About the Audi 50

Launched in 1974, the Audi 50 was a sophisticated response to the oil crisis, designed by Claus Luthe to offer premium features in a compact, front-wheel-drive package. Just six months after its debut, it was rebadged as the Volkswagen Polo, a cheaper version that eventually cannibalised the Audi's sales and led to its discontinuation in 1978. It was the first Audi to feature a transverse engine layout and established the template for the modern European supermini. Today, it is a rare collector's item, as many succumbed to rust, and it remains the only small hatchback Audi produced until the A2 arrived decades later.
