About the Renault Avantime

Designed and manufactured by Matra, the Avantime was a bold attempt to merge the space of an MPV with the style of a pillarless luxury coupé. Its striking 'one-box' design features massive double-kinematic doors and a 'Grand Air' mode that retracts all windows and the panoramic sunroof at a single touch. The 3.0-litre V6 engine provides smooth, effortless cruising, though the car's weight and soft suspension favour grand touring over sports car agility. Despite its commercial failure, it has become a cult classic, celebrated for its uncompromising design and unique place in automotive history.

Renault Avantime fun facts

  • The Avantime's 'double-kinematic' door hinges allow the massive doors to open outwards and forwards simultaneously, facilitating access in tight parking spaces.
  • With no B-pillars and a full-length glass roof, the Avantime offers a unique open-air experience that Renault marketed as 'Coupéspace'.
  • Production was so low that the financial losses incurred by the Avantime eventually led Matra to exit the car manufacturing business entirely.
