About the Renault 9

Designed by Robert Opron to be a rational, global family car, the Renault 9 was a departure from the avant-garde styling of the Renault 14. Its conventional three-box design and front-wheel-drive layout were engineered for efficiency and ease of manufacture, winning it the 1982 European Car of the Year title. The GTL trim was a popular mid-range choice, offering the 1.4-litre 'Cleon-Fonte' engine paired with a five-speed gearbox for improved motorway cruising. While once ubiquitous, the Renault 9 has become exceptionally rare in the UK, now celebrated at events like the Festival of the Unexceptional.
