About the Renault 5 Alpine Mk1
Launched in 1976, the Renault 5 Alpine was one of the world's first true hot hatchbacks, arriving months before the Volkswagen Golf GTI. It featured a 1.4-litre 'Cléon-Fonte' engine with a crossflow hemispherical cylinder head, producing double the power of the standard R5. Assembled at the Alpine factory in Dieppe, it was distinguished by its 'A5' alloy wheels, integrated front air dam, and iconic side stripes. Known as the Gordini in the UK due to trademark conflicts, it remains a highly sought-after classic for its nimble handling and giant-killing rally pedigree, famously finishing second and third in the 1978 Monte Carlo Rally.

Renault 5 Alpine Mk1 fun facts
- The car had to be renamed the Renault 5 Gordini in the UK because Chrysler Europe held the rights to the 'Alpine' name for their own hatchback.
- Because the 1.4-litre engine and its performance components took up so much space, the spare wheel had to be moved from the engine bay to the boot.
- The 5 Alpine was so effective in competition that it earned the nickname 'le planche à roulettes' (the skateboard) for its agile handling.
