About the Renault 4
Introduced in 1978, the GTL was the ultimate evolution of the Renault 4, featuring the 1.1-litre 'Cléon-Fonte' engine for improved torque and drivability. It is instantly recognisable by its grey plastic side cladding and unique front grille, designed to offer a more refined experience than the basic TL. As the world's first mass-produced five-door hatchback, the R4 combined a flat loading floor with long-travel torsion bar suspension, making it famously capable on rough terrain. Its 'umbrella' dashboard gear shifter and spartan but functional interior remain hallmarks of its charm. Today, it is a beloved classic, prized for its simplicity, low running costs, and significant role in motoring history.
