About the Volkswagen Jetta Mk2
The second-generation Volkswagen Jetta, or Mk2, arrived in 1984 as a significantly larger and more refined successor to the original Golf-with-a-boot. The GL trim was the mainstay of the range, offering a balance of comfort and the robust 1.8-litre 'GU' engine that became legendary for its longevity. While the GTI-engined GLI grabbed the headlines, the GL provided a more compliant ride and a cavernous 470-litre boot that rivalled full-sized luxury cars. Today, it is a sought-after classic for its simple mechanicals, excellent visibility, and quintessential 1980s boxy aesthetic.
