About the Wartburg 1.3

The Wartburg 1.3 was the final evolution of the Eisenach-built marque, replacing the long-running 353's smoky two-stroke engine with a modern 1.3-litre four-stroke unit licensed from Volkswagen. To accommodate the larger engine, the car received a significant front-end redesign, including a wider track and a floor-mounted gear shifter. Despite the improved reliability and refinement of the VW powertrain, the car's pre-war chassis architecture remained its Achilles' heel. Production ceased shortly after German reunification as the factory could not compete with Western manufacturers, making the 1.3 a poignant symbol of the GDR's industrial twilight.

Wartburg 1.3 fun facts

  • The engine was essentially the same unit found in the second-generation Volkswagen Polo and Golf, marking a rare technical collaboration between East and West Germany.
  • Because the VW engine was too large for the original 353 engine bay, engineers had to completely redesign the car ahead of the A-pillar, widening the front track by 10 cm.
  • A rare pickup version called the 'Trans' was produced primarily for export markets, with only about 920 units ever built.
