About the Porsche 912
Introduced in 1965 as a more affordable entry point to the Porsche range, the 912 paired the new 911's modern body and chassis with the proven 1.6-litre flat-four from the outgoing 356 SC. While it lacked the straight-line punch of the six-cylinder 911, the 912 was significantly lighter and offered superior weight distribution, leading many contemporary testers to prefer its more neutral and nimble handling. The 1967 model year is particularly notable for the introduction of the five-gauge instrument cluster, bringing the interior closer to 911 specifications. Long dismissed as a 'poor man's 911', the 912 is now highly prized by collectors for its purity, simplicity, and the unique driving character provided by its lighter rear end.

- Because the four-cylinder engine is shorter and lighter than the flat-six, the 912 has a more favourable 46/54 weight distribution compared to the early 911.
- The 1967 model year saw the debut of the 'Soft Window' Targa, featuring a zip-out plastic rear window for a near-total open-air experience.
