About the Pontiac LeMans
The 1963 Pontiac LeMans represents the final and most refined year of the innovative Y-body platform. Distinguished by its rear-mounted transaxle and curved 'rope-drive' driveshaft, it offered a near 50/50 weight distribution that was radical for American cars of the era. The '326' V8 was a single-year curiosity; to circumvent GM's displacement limits, Pontiac marketed the 336 cubic-inch engine as a 326. This combination of a lightweight unibody and a high-torque V8 provided a performance template that would evolve into the legendary GTO just one year later.

Pontiac LeMans fun facts
- The 1963 '326' engine actually displaced 336.7 cubic inches, but was renamed to stay under a GM corporate limit of 330 cubic inches for compact cars.
- It featured a unique 'rope drive' flexible steel driveshaft that was only 5/8 of an inch thick and curved to eliminate the need for a floor hump.
- The 1963 LeMans was the first year the nameplate became its own separate series rather than just an upgrade package for the Tempest.
