About the Peugeot 309
The Peugeot 309 was originally intended to be a Talbot named the Arizona, but was rebranded following the PSA Group's decision to phase out the Talbot marque. Built at the Ryton plant in the UK, it shared its doors and many mechanical components with the smaller 205, resulting in excellent chassis balance and ride quality. The 1.6 GL trim sat in the middle of the range, offering a balance of economy and sufficient performance for the era. While the GTI models are the most sought after, standard 309s are now becoming rare survivors of the 1980s family car market.

Peugeot 309 fun facts
- The 309 used the side doors from the Peugeot 205 to save on development costs, which explains its slightly unusual proportions.
- Despite its French badge, the 309 was the first Peugeot to be manufactured at the Ryton-on-Dunsmore plant in England.
- The 309 was named out of sequence because Peugeot felt the '306' name should be reserved for a more modern successor to the 305.
