About the Mitsubishi Pajero Junior

Launched in October 1995, the Pajero Junior was Mitsubishi's answer for buyers who found the kei-class Pajero Mini too underpowered but the full-size Pajero too cumbersome. It utilised a widened and lengthened version of the Mini's platform, featuring flared wheel arches and a larger 1.1-litre 4A31 engine that moved it into a higher Japanese tax bracket. Despite its diminutive size, it retained a proper 'Easy Select' 4WD system with a low-range transfer case, making it surprisingly capable off-road. It remains a popular JDM import due to its rugged mechanicals and charming 'miniature adventurer' aesthetic.

Mitsubishi Pajero Junior fun facts

  • The Pajero Junior was the basis for the 'Flying Pug', a bizarre retro-styled limited edition designed to look like a classic London taxi.
  • Unlike the Pajero Mini, which was a kei car, the Junior's wider track and larger engine meant it was classified as a 'small size' passenger vehicle in Japan.
  • The 1.1-litre 4A31 engine was shared with the contemporary Mitsubishi Colt and Lancer models of the era.
