About the Mitsubishi L300

The second-generation Mitsubishi L300, based on the P-series Delica, is a quintessential cab-over van prized for its space efficiency and mechanical simplicity. In 2.5 D trim, it utilises the legendary 4D56 diesel engine, a naturally aspirated unit known more for its longevity and low-end reliability than outright performance. Its mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout places the driver directly over the front axle, providing excellent visibility and a tight turning circle for urban deliveries. While basic by modern standards, its robust ladder-frame construction has made it a favourite for camper conversions and global overland travel.

Mitsubishi L300 fun facts

  • The L300's name is derived from 'Delica', a portmanteau of 'Delivery Car', though it was rebranded for export markets.
  • The 4D56 engine used in this model is one of Mitsubishi's longest-running powerplants, remaining in production in various forms for over 30 years.
  • Because the engine is located under the front seats, the L300 offers a completely flat load floor despite its compact external dimensions.
